Later, when Gary felt called to the ministry, he entered Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and graduated in 2004. He pastored two rural Presbyterian churches in Ohio for two years, making the 60 mile commute several times a week. Each time he came home to Robinson Street, his heart longed to be in full-time ministry in his own neighborhood.
Gary came to the U.S. to attend college, and graduated from Asbury College (Lexington, KY) in 1980 with a degree in English. He continued his studies at the University of Kentucky (M.A.) and Indiana University (Ph.D.), and then later came to Pittsburgh to teach English at Carnegie Mellon University.
